Obnoxious is a state we feel about a situation we have no control of, posing a clear restriction on what we can do, which may trigger negative emotions to feed the self to feel what has been felt. There are two clear approaches to deal with situations we find obnoxious: (1) conditioning the self to suppress emotions regarding the experienced situation, which is unconscious, based on faith, and need no acquisition of knowledge and understanding about what is happening; or (2) using our consciousness to identify what we find obnoxious on a given situation, and most important, why we find what we have found obnoxious. In that way we can perform observation, reasoning, and acquire understanding about how we can deal with that kind of situation, in a way we keep aware of what is happening in the present moment. The moment we realise why suppressing emotions is just hiding in a corner of the room of suffering, it is the moment we understand knowing the whats, whys, and hows is the foundation of self-enhancement.

It is no easy task to deal with the self in order to control, and understand, the manifestation of all kinds of emotions we may feel in a given situation we may experience on our life journey. Actually, it is a challenge another could not solve on our behalf, as anything related to the self has to be solved with our own intervention, even if such an intervention has been derived from the guidance and knowledge of another. Such external guidance and knowledge are just useful the moment they make us understand, and create, our own knowledge that implies our own explanation about why we have to do what we are doing. Buddha, the enlightened one, uses such an approach in all the teachings that have been disseminated through milenia. Everything is based on the experience of a path to understand and pursue a buddhahood state, which has been manifested in different persons able to acquire enlightenment. The last, and most known, Buddha of our era is Shakyamuni.

Anything related to a Buddha is based on observation, reasoning, and understanding of what is happening in the present moment. Believing based on faith, and out of understanding, in something related to Buddhism, or Buddha himself, is nothing more than dressing suffering in fancy and charming clothes to deceive our own self.

The source of unpleasantness is within the self, as the source of something we cannot control is on the outside, within something or someone else. We cannot turn on/off a switch to make someone else stop behaving in a way that is obnoxious, which is able to harm another. However, we can establish our own conscious strategy to enhance how we act, and react, in the face of such a behaviour. There is no singular answer for a challenge that has no singular entrance, and no singular form.

The moment we realise any answer related to the self is acquired from the inside out, it is the moment we understand why Buddha’s teachings says to believe nothing that we cannot understand within our own perspective and relativity.
