Sometimes we get into a period of suffering, which characterises living our life inside a static illusion that says everything is permanent, and we have no way of getting out from that current situation we are experiencing in the present moment. We get exposed to negative stimuli, and our unconscious mind embraces it. However, by using our consciousness, we are able to observe such a situation, analyse where the trigger of negative manifestations is, and understand anything we may experience is, by nature, impermanent. The moment we put the self in an external position we may have the illusion of permanence, grasping a fabrication of our own mind while observing another, as we cannot live a life on the behalf of that person. The more we realise impermanence is something we can only incorporate while observing the self, the more we understand our consciousness is the key to find our own way towards the path of a meaningful life.
Practising our mind training means putting all of our efforts to enhance the self, achieving peace of mind by the use of a higher state of consciousness. We get concentrated in the present moment, one step at a time. However, how could we verify the effectiveness of our mind training? The answer is: by putting such training on trial. Buddha, the enlightened one, has done it during his lifetime, mainly while in the path towards enlightenment.
We face an obnoxious person and we may embrace a period of suffering that manifests a negative emotion. Embracing such a period of suffering is a clear sign our mind training requires improvement. In another moment, we face a similar obnoxious situation and we remain in a wonderful peaceful state. What is the conclusion about that? The same as before: we need to improve our mind training, even if we get no clear sign about that. The conclusion of both situations is, indeed, the same but their purpose is quite different. In the first situation we need improvements in our mind training to step out of suffering, while in the second moment improvements in our mind training are used to prevent falling into it.
The moment we realise why we have to enhance the self, it is the moment we understand we could not perform our mind training without practising it.
