When our consciousness is in the driver's seat, not stepping into the trap of suffering, we are able to rule our mind properly, controlling the self even when someone else in the surroundings is experiencing a period of suffering. We could try to talk some senses to a mind in suffering, which does not see that harming another, physically or mentally, is useless. If it helps to make such a mind to liberate itself from suffering, great! Otherwise, we must get ready to defend the self against a direct attack. Knowledge is our power, education our weapon, consciousness the ruler, and wisdom the key to activate our personal shield to deal with negativity we have contact with.
The picture we may see when we think about suffering could be represented by a collective scene of someone shouting towards another, which makes clear that person has lost his/her mind. However, suffering is not so simple like that. There are many more tones of suffering that could be hidden in the scene, mainly that one who may have the intention to harm another mentally, not by physical actions but through words of provocation. By watching a scene from the outside we could easily jump into conclusions that a person shouting is the only one in suffering. Things are not so simple when we have consciousness at hand.
We could not assume anything without knowing exactly what has happened, as another could be at the scene, being obnoxious by using the "right words" with the clear intention to make another step into a period of suffering. That fabricated scene is configured as suffering too, and it is very simple to explain why. Our love nature is orthogonal to provocation, or any type of fabrication with the clear purpose "to test" the boundaries of another with no clear, and informed consent of that person. When such an informed consent is clear, we have no need to worry about the scene, as everyone that is part of it knows its purpose. Otherwise, that negative conditioning we may find usual, cultural, or even "normal", is the hidden characterisation of suffering that is not so easy to identify, and it gets more challenging to perform such identification when we have others manifesting their suffering in a more "energetic" way.
We have to perform our mind training to deal with both situations: a provocative person, and/or a more "energetic" one. Performing our mind and body trainings to be able to defend the self against a direct attack is our personal duty. Silence could be the strategy of choice for the majority of the time when we get attacked by words. However, we have also to be prepared for scenes where things could get physical, caring about life by defending the ones who are getting targeted. It is easy to picture the scene as a statue we have no power to move, but it is precious to keep its integrity. When we picture life as such a statue, we are certain it could not be sacrificed as we please, implying the duty to defend it no matter the circumstances.
The moment we realise caring about life is one of the most important characteristics of our love nature, it is the moment we understand why it is so precious.
