We already know we need balance to keep walking in an environment where uncertainty and impermanence dictate the events happening all around. Each step has a probability to be a source of disturbance to our balance, a weak foundation leading directly to a path of suffering. We need to choose carefully where we step, as things may not be what they look like in a dark environment. We have to look ahead but watch our back. It is usually from behind the source of the bigger threats we have to face, soon or later, in order to test our balance, and continue in the direction of the light.
Cultivating balance is a fundamental activity while walking in our life journey. When we get out of balance we fall into a trap, a dark place full of suffering. We may let negative emotions rise and manifest themselves easily. We may get deceived, being naive about the real intentions of people who get close to us. We may think everything is our fault in a negative way, instead of recognising it is with balance we start to see any situation with a positive perspective.
To get out of balance is to be uncertain about how to deal with negative situations, with little or no knowledge to realise we live in a world where things are not what they appear to be. We expect laws and rules to be followed but, in fact, there is a probability they will not. We expect fairness where such concept is considered insignificant or unknown, a place with no trace of honour. We try changing what we have no control over, and we end up trying to get on balance under an imaginary surface. The next step may be the biggest fall.
Consciousness plays a fundamental role to establish our inner balance. It is with consciousness we get aware about the environment conditions, while walking towards our beautiful path.
The moment we realise the true meaning of balance, it is the moment we know it is all about to be conscious, awake, and aware the more we grasp in something, the less we are in control of ourselves, and the more we let our decisions be dictated by external sources.
