The key to our home is only on the table if we have decided we would let it that way. There is no other option available out of violation, breaking into our personal space. The moment we identify such a violation the only option we have at hand is defending the self against anything posing a threat to our well-being. That is the law of the universe, where adaptation is performed as a required step towards evolution. The more we realise that, the more we understand no one can do anything to the self out of our own permission.

One fundamental teaching Buddha, the enlightened one, has left us is the awareness about our personal sphere of control. Such a sphere is restricted to the self, represented by our mind and body, where our consciousness is considered the ruler in exercise at the present moment. When we step into a period of suffering, we distance the self from the ruler's position, letting the unconscious mind assume the ruler's role, and implying taking risks of experiencing anything driven by the negative conditioning we have contact with.

When we are facing a challenge, we have to get conscious about the inability to control events happening in the surroundings. For example, facing an obnoxious person imposes no possibility to control his/her obnoxious behaviour. Experiencing a problem with the car we are driving represents no possibility to snap our fingers to fix the issue immediately. In those situations, we have to deal with the scene we are observing, which involves performing our personal analysis and understanding about it, as best as we can for the moment. Dealing with our own suffering works the same way.

Observing our own suffering in a conscious way is like leaving the key on the table for an entrance of negativity by the front door. However, as we are aware about the moment we are experiencing, we still possess the keys at hand, holding the power to deal with suffering as we wish to do so.
