It is not always that we get to cross a clear road, where we have to be prepared to deal with a dirty environment, with a lot of dust that may contaminate us during the journey. Preventing such contamination is our personal duty, which requires, at least, consciousness to not let the dust cloud our senses and cause unconscious actions and reactions to anything we have contact with from the outside. By keeping consciousness at hand, any experience becomes a source for priceless knowledge that contributes to cultivating and enhancing peace of mind.
Let us draw a clear and strong separation between preparation and expectation. While preparation means we are aware of what could happen, and therefore we can develop skills to deal with uncertainty in a conscious and meaningful way, expectation represents a mind in the future, disturbing the balance achieved by keeping the self in the present moment. Being prepared is then crucial to deal with darkness, even if uncertainty is vivid in the scene we are part of.
If we let our actions be influenced by any expectation we may have, we are just stepping into a period of suffering, which allows negative conditioning to dictate our actions, and negative emotions to be manifested from the inside out. We may experience sadness, frustration, fear, despair, which boost the influence of darkness in the scene. We can prevent falling in such a trap by performing our body and mind training.
If, by any chance, we fall into the aforementioned trap, the only way to diminish the deterioration caused by the period of suffering we may be experiencing is regaining consciousness. It is extremely important to remember that in order to develop a personal trigger that activates consciousness when our unconscious mind attempts to get on the driver's seat.
The moment we realise how to keep consciousness at hand no matter the circumstances, it is the moment we understand the magnitude of the power we have at hand to deal with any scene we are part of.
