If we start analysing the different societal models we’ve available at hand, we start acquiring the clear understanding that every single model works well if we attain some sort of balance, where every single human being experiences, at least, the minimum level of comfort and access to resources that enable people to live a meaningful life. Thus, the problem isn’t in the societal model itself but in how it’s applied. If we’ve minds in suffering who consider themselves members of a superior race, and therefore deserving to earn and have access to a bigger part of the resources shared with the entire population, we could never attain such a balance. And all problems we experience and need to deal with are then derived from luxury, greediness, jealousy, and inequality observed among people. The moment we realise that, it’s the moment we understand a crucial and hard truth: treating and considering people as equals is the first step to diminish the huge influence and power of hatred culture.
All concerns we’ve about fundamental human rights, wars and conflicts, climate change, or any other challenging situation related to modern society itself are derived from the inability of the majority to see, consider, and treat others as equals. Buddha, the enlightened one, has attained such a priceless piece of knowledge, which is the foundation for almost all of his teachings. Our intrinsic love nature associated with our equal status could leverage a massive change in how we distribute resources and guarantee everyone one has a minimum level of comfort and access to resources that enables living and experiencing a meaningful life.
The central problem is then reduced to making people conscious that we’re equals, and therefore, we’re the same. It means that we would be able to make a balanced progress of society if the majority was conscious of the need to be fair and sustainable without compromising the well-being of one another. In my humble opinion, it was the unsolved and greatest challenge of all past civilisations, and it’s still the unsolved and greatest challenge of current and modern society. And, unfortunately, we’ve neither prophecy nor prediction that solves a problem deep in, and part of, the corruption of a human being, which is also the subject of almost all Buddha’s teachings: the awareness, observation, understanding, and cessation of our own suffering.
Let’s do our share, contributing to making the world a better place to live, hoping we can attain such an equal, fair, and balanced society, eventually.
