As the last Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, the enlightened one, has taught us through his teachings concerning how we deal with suffering and the negative consequences of it, which is related to how we perceive the environment we’re inserted into and everything in our surroundings, we need to keep ourselves in the present moment, being conscious of what happens both within and before us. Such a fundamental conscious posture implies becoming the king or queen of our personal reign we call mind, ruling it through a knowledge- and evidence-based regime instead of a belief- and slavery-based one. There’s no acceptance without understanding, and it cannot ever be, as understanding of what we do and experience is an essential pillar of our own existence that is carved on stone. Becoming king or queen of our own mind has a “price” to pay, and that “price” is always related to the environment we’re inserted into, and the people in our surroundings. The more dishonour, dishonesty, and deception get promoted by people in our surroundings, implying a negative and obnoxious atmosphere in the environment we’re inserted into, the higher it’s that aforementioned “price”, which may affect our capability of being independent, i.e., our intrinsic ability to wear the conceptual crown that establishes ourselves as the ruler of our own mind. When someone else eagerly wants to rule and control us and our behaviour, what they really want is the ability to control and rule our crown on our behalf, making us a slave of our own suffering; an extremely higher “price” to pay, which constitutes a much easier state to rule and control another, as it implies the absence of consciousness at hand in the present moment.
We’re all heirs to the thrones of our own minds yet the majority of us have no consciousness of that, being imprisoned deep within an infinite loop of suffering, which is dictated, conditioned, and ruled by dishonour, dishonesty, and deception related to the illusions we’ve contact with in the environment we’re inserted into. The importance of a genuine and supportive community—which is dubbed Sangha (संघ) in Sanskrit—is highlighted and reassured by the last Buddha, the enlightened one, as one of the three jewels of Buddhism. It’s only when we can either find or establish a genuine and supportive Sangha that we ensure the intrinsic power we develop is multiplied n-fold, with n representing the number of members of the Sangha, who’re able to keep consciousness at hand and promote a continuous learning path that expands both our intrinsic abilities and acquired capabilities towards unimaginable levels in a steady, stable, and faster way. The only requirement for such an astonishing outcome is having all the Sangha aligned with our love nature and with the purpose it promotes, sacrificing no independence of every single king or queen that are members of it. Such independence is attested by the Buddha teaching that says we’ve the right whether to accept or to reject anything we’ve no agreement with.
The fact that we may not be a member of a genuine and supportive Sangha doesn’t invalidate our intrinsic ability to acquire as much knowledge as we can, developing ourselves in a conscious and meaningful way while in the middle of an environment with no proper conditions where the aforementioned Sangha could be established. In fact, the only difference is that we’ve no community to take refuge into, requiring the need to keep very clear in our mind that we depend on our ability to perform our body and mind training to become extremely skilled in the arts of self-defence, being able to deal with anything before us with little or no external support.
The moment we realise and understand how to become the king or queen of our own mind, it’s the moment we understand how to properly assess the “price” we need to pay in the environment we’re inserted into, and if that aforementioned price is either “affordable” or “too high”, which influences the decisions we make and the actions we take regarding our own path.
